The Common Causes of a Leaking Boiler (and How to Get It Fixed Fast!)

 In Appliances

Maintaining your boiler may not be on the top of your mind when it comes to caring for your home. But, performing regular maintenance and repairs is one of the best ways to save money in the long run.

A leaking boiler could damage not only your boiler but other parts of your home as well. Water damage is a serious issue and an inconvenient one.

Essential for environmental control, your boiler is the key to keeping your home or business comfortable.

You won’t want to get caught in the cold as the winter sets in. Let’s see what might be causing your boiler’s leak and how to care for it properly.

What Are the Common Causes of a Leaking Boiler?

Your boiler is held together by many connected parts and pipes. Since it holds water, the potential for rust and lime buildup is prevalent.

Many of the causes of leaking can be traced back to these issues. But, the treatments and signs will depend based upon where these weaknesses or blockage occurs.

Let’s explore these each individually and then explore some possible fixes.

Improper Installation

If your boiler was not installed correctly it could cause your boiler to leak. It could be a bad soldering job among other things. It is best to get it looked at soon, especially if you have a warranty on it.

Corrosion and Lime buildup

Corroded parts or pipes can mean the water will drip and puddle up on the floor. Likewise, lime can block pipes and lead to leakage as well.

Some of the common signs that this is what happened to your boiler can be puddling beneath the machine or alongside it. It is important to get this checked out right away.

Loose Joints and Bad Connections

As with any appliance or piece of machinery, boilers suffer wear and tear with age. Over time, bolts and nuts will likely get weakened, loose, or erode.

This may mean the pipes aren’t tightly fastened or connected and any water pushed through them will leak. You could try to tighten them or have someone tighten them.

Pressure and Temperature Management

Pressure in your boiler needs to be maintained at or below the two on your gauge. If you notice it increasing above this level, it could be a problem with the gauge or sensors, which can lead to the pressure being far too high.

Likewise, improper temperature management can lead to the water within the system boiling. This means the water expands and could overflow.

Should You Get Your Leaking Boiler Fixed?

A leaking boiler is a serious issue that can be indicative of decay within your machine’s system. The longer you neglect this, the worse it gets.

The leaking can lead to further damages to the machine. But, it can also damage your home by causing water damage to the floors, walls, or other spaces.
