Winter HVAC Maintenance Checklist for Perfectly Warm Homes

 In HVAC

As the cold months approach, nothing beats a warm, cozy home. Winter HVAC maintenance can help your heating system run smoothly, keep energy bills in check, and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

A little preparation now can prevent a winter full of surprise repairs and cold nights. This checklist walks you through key HVAC tasks to keep winter heating running smoothly and your home warm all season.

Adjust the Thermostat

Your thermostat is the brain of your HVAC system. Ensure that it is set to the appropriate temperature.

Depending on the time of day, the Environmental Protection Agency suggests setting your thermostat between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you have a programmable thermostat, consider scheduling lower temperatures during the night or when you’re away, allowing for HVAC energy savings.

Replace or Clean Air Filters

Dirty air filters can significantly impact HVAC efficiency. Make it a habit to check the filters monthly. Replace them if they are clogged with dust, pet hair, or debris, or if they appear dark and discolored.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends using a disposable filter with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating of 11 to 13. This type of filter captures smaller particles, helping improve indoor air quality and reducing allergy and asthma triggers.

Inspect Ductwork

Checking your ductwork is an important part of winter HVAC maintenance. Leaks or gaps can reduce efficiency and make your heating system work harder.

  • Look for visible holes or disconnected joints
  • Check for loose or damaged insulation
  • Seal gaps with HVAC-approved duct tape or mastic
  • Ensure vents are fully open and unobstructed

Check the Outdoor Unit

Keeping your outdoor unit clear is essential for efficient airflow and optimal heating performance during winter. Small obstacles or buildup can make your system work harder than it needs to.

  • Trim nearby branches or vegetation
  • Inspect the casing and components for damage or corrosion
  • Level the unit if it has shifted on its pad
  • Clear any ice or snow that may block airflow around the unit

Test Your System

Before the cold weather fully sets in, run your heating system to make sure it’s operating properly. Listen for unusual noises such as rattling, popping, or buzzing, and check that warm air is coming from all vents.

If anything seems off or the system is not heating evenly, contact a licensed HVAC technician for an inspection. A pre-season HVAC inspection could save you a fortune in repair bills and discomfort.

Look for Air Leaks

Heat loss can occur through walls, windows, and doors. To prevent this, check for drafts and seal them with caulk or weather stripping.

By reducing the heat loss, you’re helping your HVAC system work more efficiently.

Schedule Winter HVAC Maintenance

While some tasks can be handled by homeowners, an annual professional check-up is crucial. HVAC professionals can conduct comprehensive inspections to ensure everything is functioning as intended. It’s recommended to schedule preventative HVAC care before the peak heating season.
