3 Common HVAC Problems and How to Prevent Them

 In HVAC

Summer is here, but this time, things are a little different. Thanks to climate change and the recent El Niño storm, world temperatures are hotter than ever. Without a working HVAC system, this heat will be miserable.

Naturally, it’s important to prepare in advance. Many folks are handling their HVAC maintenance now before temperatures get really bad. In most cases, they run into the same common HVAC problems–all of which are preventable.

In this guide, we will help you keep your HVAC care at its best. Read on for the top three HVAC problems people haveand how you can prevent them.

Common HVAC Problems #1: Old, Dirty Filters

Filters are critical to your HVAC system. They remove dirt, pet dander, harmful contaminants, and even viruses from the air. As important as they are, they do not last forever.

You should replace your filters at least once every six months. Otherwise, all of the gunk that they collect clogs your filters and the vents.

Go too long without replacing them, and all the crap they hold back blows into your home. To make matters worse, they also make your HVAC system work harder and less efficiently. Call your technician every six months to replace them.

#2: Dirty Coils

AC care means keeping the AC clean. The part where the AC gathers the most dirt and grime is on its evaporator coil. The more grime that gathers on the coil, the worse your AC performs.

This form of maintenance is a bit more difficult than changing filters. Call your local AC technician and they will power wash the evaporator coil. Depending on the type of AC that you have, they may have to pop the hatch to access it.

Coils, like filters, require regular cleaning. If you are noticing a less efficient system, it may be time for HVAC maintenance and coil cleaning.

#3: Leaks of Refrigerant

Refrigerants, such as Freon are the lifeblood of your HVAC cooling system. Without it, your system won’t be able to produce more than a cool breeze. Although it is a closed-loop system, you will need to top up and replace Freon on a regular basis.

Sometimes, though, a leak will spring up in the coils and refrigerant pipe. We do not recommend trying to identify the leak or patching it yourself. Instead, call your technician and they will get you sorted out.

Patching leaks and filling up refrigerants takes no time at all. Afterward, your system will be back to full performance and efficiency.
